NWSAA supports a wide variety of application programming interfaces (APIs) and protocols that are ideal for client/server applications and distributed processing. Whether it's for host terminal emulation, client/server and distributed applications, or connectivity across local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs), NWSAA offers a robust set of communications, networking, and system management features. NWSAA provides an industrial-strength networking solution for your workstation. COMMEXEC provides communication services support. NetWare provides the operating system platform on which to load NLMs. Macintosh clients can also be supported using a Novell® 3270 interface.įigure 1-1 shows how NWSAA 4 is integrated with NetWare. TCP/IP-capable clients (such as Macintosh and UNIX® clients) are supported through NWSAA's TN3270 and TN5250 interfaces.
These clients can be used to access both mainframe and AS/400 systems.

NWSAA 4 includes client support for Microsoft® Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, DOS, OS/2®, Apple Macintosh, and NetWare. It provides PU 2.0 and PU 2.1 node functions and supports most 3270, TN3270, TN3270E, 5250, and TN5250 emulation. You can connect to these resources over numerous data link types, including token ring, Ethernet, FDDI, frame relay, SDLC, X.25/QLLC, custom, and IBM-EEDLC (LDLC), and support users using LU types for display, printer, file transfer, and APPC applications. NWSAA 4 enables you to access mainframe and AS/400 resources from NetWare networks. NOTE: In this book, "NetWare" refers to the NetWare 5 TM and IntranetWare 4.11 TM NWSAA 4 requires the NetWare 5 TM or IntranetWare 4.11 TM operating system.
COMMEXEC is a set of NLMs bundled with NWSAA 4. NetWare for SAA 4 (NWSAA 4) is a set of NetWare Loadable Module TM (NLM TM) files built on the NetWare® COMMEXEC Communication Executive (COMMEXEC). This chapter introduces NetWare for SAA 4 (NWSAA 4), its functions and features.
